CREE NURSE JEAN CUTHAND GOODWILL DIED

Born August 14, 1928, raised in Little Pine First Nation (FN), Saskatchewan (SK), Jane spent 3 years in a sanitarium with tuberculosis. She graduated from the Holy Family Hospital nursing program in 1954–the 1st Indigenous registered nurse in SK. Goodwill served as: Executive Director, Indian & Métis Friendship Centre, Winnipeg (1962); co-founder (1974) & President (1983-90), Aboriginal Nurses Association (Assn.) of Canada (CA); “Special advisor” to the minister of National Health and Welfare (1981); Indian Health Studies Department (Dept.) Head, FNs University (Univ.) of CA; Canadian (CDN) Public Health Assn. (CPHA) board member; and President, CDN Society for Circumpolar Health. She helped develop a National Native Access to Nursing Program, Univ. of SK, and Indian Health Studies Dept., SK Indian Federated College, Univ. of Regina. Honors: Officer, Order of CA (1991). Awards: 1st Jean Goodwill (Manitoba Indian Nurses Assn., 1981); Indspire (1994); and CPHA (2000) Awards. Jane died in Regina, SK.
