NATIVE HAWAIIAN OLYMPIC SWIMMER PUA KEALOHA DIED
Born on November 14, 1902, in Waialua, Hawaii, Pua was an American competition swimmer who represented the United States at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium as a 17-year-old. He won a gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. team in the men’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay. A teammate on that squad was fellow Native Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku. The relay team set a new world record of 10:04.4 in the event final. Kealoha also received an individual silver medal for his second-place performance in the men’s 100-meter freestyle. According to a member of the Kahanamoku family, Kealoha was the only person to swim unassisted from Molokai to O’ahu. Pua was long a fixture at Laguna Beach, California, where he was a beachboy, diver, surfer, occasional movie actor, and ukelele player. He died in San Francisco.
