LAKOTA AUTHOR VIRGINIA DRIVING HAWK SNEVE BORN

Sneve, born on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota (SD), received both a bachelor’s degree (Science, 1954) and master’s degree (Education, 1969) from SD State University. Teaching English in SD public schools & at the Flandreau Indian School, she also was editor at Brevet Press, board member of the Native American Consortium, Center for Public Broadcasting, and United Sioux Tribes Cultural Arts, as well as Historiographer of the Episcopal Church of SD. Sneve has published over 20 books on SD and Aboriginal American history, poetry, fiction, and works for children. Her latest, The Christmas Coat: Memories of My Sioux Childhood” was published in 2011. A recipient of the 2000 National Humanities Medal, other awards include: 1975 Woman of Achievement, National Federation of Press Women; SD State Counselors Assn. Human Rights Award (1996); Spirit of Crazy Horse Award (1996); SD Education Assn. Human Services Award (1994); and North American Indian Prose Award (1992).
