COUER D’ALENE WRITER JANET CAMPBELL HALE BORN

Janet’s father was of the Coeur d’Alene tribe and mother was of Kutenai & Cree heritage. She was born in Riverside, California, but raised on the Coeur d’Alene & Yakima Reservations. After attending the Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, she entered San Francisco City College in 1964, but transferred to the University (Univ.) of California (UC), Berkeley, where she earned a bachelor’s degree (1972). She received a master’s degree from UC, Davis, in 1984. After her works first appeared in a 1972 anthology of poems by Native American writers, she published 2 noted novels: The Owl’s Song (1974) & The Jailing of Cecelia Capture (1985) [the latter earning a Pulitzer Prize nomination]. Other works: Custer Lives in Humboldt County & Other Poems (1978), Women on the Run (1999); and Bloodlines: Odyssey of a Native Daughter (1993). Hale taught at several colleges and was resident writer at the Universities of Oregon & Washington. Hale died on November 23, 2021, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
