LUMBEE ASHTON LOCKLEAR BORN—WORLD CHAMPION GYMNAST

Ashton, born in Lumberton, North Carolina, began gymnastics at age 5. In her 2014, she won personal gold on uneven bars (bars) at the U.S. Classic (Classic), U.S. Nationals & Pan American Championships (PanAms), and helped the U.S. to team gold (TG) at the PanAms & World Championships (WCs). Locklear then silver on bars at the 2015 Nationals. With the National Team in 2016, she won gold on bars at the City of Jesolo Trophy (JT), Pacific Rim Championships (PRC), Classic & Nationals, helped the U.S. to TG at the JT & PRC, and was named Olympic team alternate. In 2017, on bars, she won bronze at JT and silver at the Nationals, and became a Nike N7 ambassador. While surgery kept Ashton from competing in 2018, that July, she confirmed that she was a sexual abuse victim of former U.S. Women’s National Team physician, Larry Nassar. In 2019, while 1st on bars & 4th on balance beam at the WC National Qualifier, she didn’t qualify for either the American or Classic. In May, Ashton retired from gymnastics.
