KUAUI GOVERNOR FREDERICK WILLIAM KAHAPULA BECKLEY, SR. DIED

Born in Waimea, on November 26, 1845, his grandfather, British naval captain George Charles Beckley, was an adviser to King Kamehameha I; his mother was the daughter of High Chief Hoolulu. Accordingly, Frederick was a chief. In 1867, Beckley married part-Hawaiian Emma Kaili Metcalf (1847–1929). Beckley worked as a purser on the steamship Kilauea and was later appointed second clerk in the land office after King Kalākaua’s ascension in 1874. On the death of Edwin Harbottle Boyd in 1875, he was appointed Royal Chamberlain but resigned to do sugar business on Molokai. In 1880, he successfully ran as a representative for Molokai and Lanai. In August 1880, Beckley became Governor of Kauaʻi when John E. Bush resigned to take the post of Interior Minister. Beckley held this post until his death in Honolulu.
