MARCH 24, 780

REIGN OF MAYAN AJAW (PIEDRO NEGRAS) HA K’IN XOOK ENDS

Haʼ Kʼin Xook, also known as Ruler 6 and Ajaw of the Piedras Negras Maya settlement in current day-Guatemala, ruled during the Late Classic Period, from 767–780 AD. His name translates to “Water Sun Shark.” Son of Itzam Kʼan Ahk II, he ascended the throne on February 14, 767 AD following the death of his brother, Yoʼnal Ahk III. Haʼ Kʼin Xook’s reign ended with either his death or his abdication in favor of his brother Kʼinich Yat Ahk II. He left behind several stelae at Piedras Negras and a stone fragment from El Porvenir. In addition, a stone seat known as Throne 1 was erected by Kʼinich Yat Ahk II and records either the death or abdication of Haʼ Kʼin Xook. He may have been a weak leader as he erected few monuments and did not enforce his power beyond the existing Piedras Negras hegemony. However, his reign was quiet. Kʼinich Yat Ahk II took up the throne on May 31, 781 AD, almost a year after Haʼ Kʼin Xook’s reign officially ended.
