ALEUT ACTIVIST ALICE PETRIVELLI DIED

Born in Atka, Alaska (AK) on November 18, 1929, Alice’s Aleut village was forcibly relocated by the U.S. to southeastern AK during WWII. After earning an associate degree in business administration at Haskell Institute, she married Frank Petrivelli and was an Army wife until he retired. Returning to AK, she worked for the Aleut Corporation (AC) as: Receptionist (1972); board member (1976-2008—AC’s longest serving member); and its 1st female President/CEO (1990-96). She helped get Federal legislation providing reparations, a formal apology, and compensation for the Aleut relocation and led AC toward stable investments & increased earnings [Alaska Business Monthly named AC one of AK’s Top 49 businesses in 1995]. Petrivelli also: Helped found the Aleut Foundation (AF); was President of Atxam Corporation; and taught traditional foods & history. Honors: AK Federation of Natives (AFN) Co-Citizen of the Year (CoY) (1979) & CoY (1990); and AK Women’s Hall of Fame (2016). She died in Anchorage, AK.
