PARAGUAYAN GUARANI POET/MUSICIAN MANUEL ORTIZ GUERRERO BORN

Guerrero was born in the city of Villarrica del Espíritu Santo, Paraguay, and was raised by his grandmother. After completing his first studies in a school in Villarrica, he began to write poetry while attending Colegio Nacional de Villarrica and became known as Manú among his classmates. In 1914, he entered the Colegio Nacional de la Capital in Asunción and gained the status of poet and leader of a whole generation. Published first in the Revista del Centro Estudiantil student centre magazine, Guerrero became known to local papers. In the 1920s, in addition to publishing poetry, he wrote plays and lyrics in Guarani for the songs of his friend, José Asunción Flores. Guerrero eventually was exiled from his country and went to Brazil. He died in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on May 8, 1933
