CHOCTAW LEGISLATOR/AIDS ACTIVIST AL MCAFFREY BORN

Born in Konewa, Oklahoma (OK), McAffrey was raised in Sulphur, OK. After graduating from Sulphur High School (1966), Al graduated from OK State University (1974), and enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving as a Navy Corpsman. Leaving the Navy, he joined the OK City (OKC) Police Department and later owned several successful small businesses. In 2006, McAffrey was elected to the OK House of Representatives. Becoming the first openly LGBT person elected to serve in the state legislature. He won reelection in 2008 and in 2010. During his last term, he also served as assistant minority floor leader. In February 2012, McAffrey won a special election to the OK Senate. McAffrey ran twice unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014 & 2016. A supporter of AIDS awareness, he is on the board of the Regional AIDS Intercommunity Network-Oklahoma and the Advisory Council for the OKC AIDS Walk. McAffrey is a voting member of the Choctaw Nation.
