FORT SILL APACHE ARTIST ROBERT HAOZOUS BORN

Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, his father, sculptor Allan Houser, was Chiricahua Apache; his mother was Navajo. Raised in Brigham City, Utah (UT), Bob changed his last name to his family’s Apache name. Following UT State University & 4-years Navy service, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from California College of Arts & Crafts (1970). Haozous won a Gold Medal & 1st Prize at Heard Museum’s 1971 & 1975 Sculpture Exhibitions. The Heard honored Bob & his father with a 1983 retrospective. Bob’s sculpture “Woman in Love,” graced the White House & Clinton Library. Exhibits include: British, Heard, Millicent Rogers, Philbrook Art, Roswell, Southwest, Norsk Sjøfarts, and Wheelwright Museums (Mus.); Mus. of Indian Arts and Culture; National Mus. of the American Indian (AI); Westphalian Mus. of Natural History; Albuquerque Mus. of Art and History; Institute of AI Arts; and Daybreak Star Cultural Center. He also created public art for several cities and for the Seattle Seahawks Stadium.
