MÉTIS FORMER NHL PLAYER AARON ASHAM BORN

From Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Asham played 4 years with the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels (1994-98). Drafted 71st overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 1996, he made his NHL debut with Montreal during the 1998–99 season. After 4 years of going back-and-forth between Montreal and its affiliates, he was traded in 2002 to the New York Islanders where he became a mainstay regularly scoring 10+ goals. In 2007, Aaron played for the New Jersey Devils before joining the Philadelphia Flyers. In the 2010 playoffs, Asham scored 4 goals as the Flyers defeated Montreal to reach the Stanley Cup Finals against the Chicago Blackhawks. Asham netted a goal in the Finals won by the Blackhawks. Asham played for the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2010-12 and for the New York Rangers from 2012-14. In 2015, Asham signed with the Gander Flyers of the Central West Senior Hockey League. Returning to Portage la Prairie, Asham started his charity called “Arron’s Chance to Play Hockey” aimed at providing opportunities to enhance the emotional, physical, social and intellectual well-being of children.
