MÉTIS NOVELIST SANDRA LOUISE BIRDSELL BORN

Birdsell, born in Hamiota, Manitoba (MB), studied creative writing at University of Winnipeg and received arts grants in 1979 & 1982. Her awards include: 1984, Joseph S. Stauffer & National Magazine (Falling in Love) and Gerald Lampert (Night Travellers); 1990 Books in Canada First Novel (The Missing Child); 1992 Governor General nomination (GGN) & Book of the Year & 1993 Marion Engel (The Chrome Suite); 1997 GGN & Saskatchewan (SK) Book of the Year (The Two-headed Calf); 2007 SK Best Fiction (Children of the Day), and 2010 GGN (Waiting for Joe). The Town That Floated Away (1997) & The Russländer (2001) also earned nominations. A Writer in Residence at colleges & universities, Banff Centre for the Arts, and Maritime Writers Workshop, she has also authored TV scripts. Appointed a Member of the Order of Canada (2010) and invested with SK Order of Merit (2012), she is a member of PEN International, Writers Union of Canada, and SK & MB Writers Guilds.
