INNU PETER PENASHUE BORN–1ST INNU CANADIAN CABINET MEMBER

Born in Sheshatshiu, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Peter attended Memorial University of NL. For the Innu Nation (IN), Penashue served as a Land Claims Director, Executive Director & Financial Administrator, President (1990), Grand Chief (GC) (1990-97 & 1999-2004), and Deputy GC (2007-10). He helped negotiate the IN- Voisey’s Bay Nickel Company impacts-benefit agreement. In 2011, Peter, a member of the Conservative Party of Canada, was elected to the House of Commons (HOC) representing the riding of Labrador. He was also Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs & President of the Queen’s Privy Council. In early 2013, Penashue paid over $45,000 in fines for improper campaign contributions and, in March, resigned his seat. He was defeated in his 2013 & 2015 attempts to regain the seat. Penashue later served as an IN representative on the Independent Expert Advisory Committee examining health concerns surrounding the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project.
