ACT OF JUNE 20 AUTHORIZES LEASES OF HAWAII NATIONAL PARK LAND TO NATIVE HAWAIIANS

H.R. 1995 was an Act to add certain lands on the island of Hawaii to the Hawaii National Park, and for other purposes. Enacted on June 20, 1938, the Act not only expanded Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park but also acknowledged the unique status of the Hawaiian people by including in the Act a provision (Section 3) to lease lands within the extension to Native Hawaiians and to permit fishing in the area “only by native Hawaiian residents of said area or of adjacent villages and by visitors under their guidance.”
