OJI-CREE ARTIST JACKSON BEARDY DIED—FOUNDED PROFESSIONAL NATIVE INDIAN ARTISTS INC. (PNIAI)

Born July 24, 1944, at Garden Hill First Nation in Manitoba (MB), Jackson studied art at the University (Univ.) of MB. Of the “Woodlands School of Art,” he consulted on Expo 67’s Indians of Canada pavilion and his works graced Canada’s & MB’s centennials (1967 & 1970). In 1972, he, Daphne Odjig & Alex Janvier exhibited at Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG). In 1973, they joined Carl Ray, Norval Morrisseau, Eddy Cobiness & Joseph Sanchez (“Indian Group of Seven”) to form PNIAI.” Beardy presented a painting to Queen Elizabeth II in 1979. A Senior Arts Adviser, Dept. of Indian Affairs & Northern Development (1982-83) & Art Advisor/Cultural Consultant, MB Museum of Man & Nature (MBMM&N), his museum exhibits include: Canadian History; Glenbow, Royal Ontario & MBMM&M. Others include: the McMichael Collection; WAG; Simon Frazier, British Columbia & Wellington Univ.; and Windsor Castle. Honors: Canada Centennial Medal (1967); and Canada Council Grant (1982). Beardy died in Winnipeg.
