MÉTIS FILMMAKER GIL CARDINAL DIED

Born July 19, 1950, in Edmonton, Alberta, raised in a foster home, Gil attended Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s radio & TV arts program. From 1971-80, he rose from cameraman to senior producer at Alberta Education Communications Corp (Access) and directed Shadow Puppets: Indian Myths and Legends. In 1980, Gil began doing documentaries for the National Film Board of Canada such as: Children of Alcohol (1983); Foster Child–won a 1987 Gemini Award; Keyanaw Tatuskhatamak (1987); The Spirit Within (1990); David with F.A.S. (1997); and Totem: The Return of the G’psgolox Pole (2003). For CBC, he directed Bordertown Café & Big Bear with Gordon Tootoosis & Tantoo Cardinal (1986) and Indian Summer: The Oka Crisis (2006) about the 1990 Mohawk standoff. Gil also directed episodes of North of 60The Rez. Awards: Indspire Award for Film and Television (1997); and David Billington Award, Alberta Media Production Industries Assn. (2015). He died in Edmonton.
