CHEYENNE/ARAPAHOE PAINTER HOCK E AYE VI (EDGAR HEAP OF BIRDS) BORN

Edgar, born in Wichita, Kansas (KS), attended Haskell Indian School, University (Univ.) of KS [Bachelor of Fine Arts (FA), 1976], Temple Univ., Tyler School of Art (Master of FA, 1979), and Royal College of Art, London (1976-77). Known for text-based conceptual art, his Exhibitions include: Full Blooded (1984), Center of the American Indian, Oklahoma (OK) City, OK; Surviving Active Shooter Custer (2019), MoMA PS1; and Old Indian Tricks (2023), Hannah Traore. A visiting professor at numerous universities and art schools across the globe, he taught Native American Studies & FAs at Univ. of OK. Grants: National Endowment for the Arts; Rockefeller, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Bonfil Stanton Foundations; and Pew Charitable Trusts. Honors: USA Ford Fellowship (2012); and Member, American Academy of Arts & Sciences (2020). Museum collections include Museum of Modern Art; National Museum of the American Indian; Metropolitan Museum of Art; British Museum; and the Library of Congress.
