CHICKASAW OLYMPIAD/AAU PLAYER JESSE “CAB” RENICK DIED

Jesse, of Chickasaw & Choctaw heritage, was born on September 29, 1917, in Hickory, Oklahoma (OK). He played guard in high school in Marietta, OK, and for Hale’s Tire Shop — an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team. At Murray State College, he was a Missouri Valley Conference All-Star in basketball & football. At OK A&M University (now OK State), he was an All-American forward in 1939 & 1940. Renick then left A&M to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1946, he played for the AAU Phillips 66ers and in 1948 captained the U.S. Gold Metal Olympic Team becoming the 2nd Native American, after Jim Thorpe, to win Olympic Gold. Turning to coaching, his greatest fame was leading the Phillips 66ers to the 1950 AAU national title. Renick later coached basketball & taught at the Albuquerque Indian School. A member of the Chickasaw Nation, he was inducted into the OK Sports, American Indian, and Chickasaw Nation Halls of Fame. “Cab” died on November 25, 1999, in Ada, OK.
