ANISHINAABE SURGEON DR. NADINE CARON BORN

Caron, born in Kamloops, British Columbia (BC), of Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation (FN), is Canada’s 1st FN female general surgeon. University Education: Simon Fraser—Bachelor of Science, basketball star & top undergraduate; BC (UBC) Faculty of Medicine (FM)—MD, top student, 1st female FM graduate; Harvard–Master’s degree in Public Health (PH); and California, San Francisco–endocrine surgical oncology fellowship. At UBC, she is on FM’s, Department of Surgery faculty, co-founded & directed its Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health, is FNs Health Authority Chair in Cancer & Wellness, teaches in its School of Population, and heads its Northern Medical Program. She also teaches at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of PH, and Univ. of Northern BC (UNBC). Public service: BC Ministry of Health & BC Medical Association commissions; Genome Sciences Centre; and Northern Biobank Project. In 2016, the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada awarded her the Dr. Thomas Dignan Award.
