TRACEY DEER BORN–MOHAWK FILM DIRECTOR

Born on the Kahnawake Reserve near Montreal, Tracey graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in film studies. Deer’s documentary debut, Mohawk Girls, won the Alanis Obomsawin Award in 2005. Club Native (2008) earned: Gemini, Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television’s (ACC&T) Canada, and Colin Low Awards; Best Documentary, Dreamspeakers Festival; and Best Canadian Film, First Peoples’ Festival. One More River: The Deal that Split the Cree (2004) was Best Documentary at Les Rendez-vous du cinéma Québécois. Beans (2021), set amid the 1990 Oka Crisis, was featured at the New York International Children’s Film Festival. Her TV series Mohawk Girls (based on the documentary) ran from 2014-17. Tracey also worked on the comedy pilot, Escape Hatch, and wrote for Anne with an E. In 2006, Deer formed her own production company, Mohawk Princess Productions. In 2017, she joined the board of the ACC&T, and in 2019 was elected 1st Vice President of the Directors Guild of Canada.
