NATIVE HAWAIIAN MAJOR LEAGUE PLAYER SHANE “THE FLYIN’ HAWAIIAN” VICTORINO BORN

Victorino, born in Wailuku, Hawaii, of Native Hawaiian, European & Japanese descent, set the state high school record in the 100-meter race. Drafted by the Los Angeles (LA) Dodgers, Shane mostly played from 1999-2005 in the minor leagues. In 2005, with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre in the International League (IL), he hit .310, was IL & Triple-A All-Star & IL Most Valuable Player. In 2006, Shane became the Philadelphia Phillies’ starting right fielder. In 2008, Shane batted .293, hit a grand slam homer (GSHR) in the playoffs, and helped the Phillies win the World Series (WS). He also received the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award & won the 1st of 4 Gold Glove Awards. In 2009, Victorino hit .292 and was an All-Star. When his offense declined, he was traded to the Dodgers in 2012, but signed with the Boston Red Sox that winter. In 2013, he hit .294, smashed a GSHR in the playoffs, and helped the Sox win the WS. Disabled most of 2014, Shane was traded to the LA Angels in 2015. He retired from baseball in 2018.
