WILLIAM A. BOWLES PROCLAIMS PAN INDIAN STATE OF MUSCOGEE

The State of Muskogee was a proclaimed sovereign nation located in Florida. Founded in 1799, it was led by William Augustus Bowles, a Loyalist veteran of the American Revolutionary War who lived among the Muscogee and who envisioned uniting the American Indians of the Southeast into a single nation that could resist the expansion of the United States. Bowles enjoyed the support of the Miccosukee (Seminole) and several Muscogee bands. He envisioned his state also encompassing the Cherokee, Upper and Lower Creeks, Choctaw, and Chickasaw. After the 1802 Treaty of Amiens briefly ended hostilities between Britain and France and Spain, the Seminoles signed a treaty with Spain in August. Bowles was captured and imprisoned in Havana, Cuba, where he died in 1805.
