MI’KMAQ CHIEF LAWRENCE PAUL BORN—FOUNDER, CONFEDERACY OF MAINLAND MI’KMAQ

Born in St. John, New Brunswick, and raised on the Shubenacadie Indian Reserve, now Indian Brook, Nova Scotia, Paul joined the Canadian Navy and Army and later was a graduate of Success Business College, Truro.  He served several terms as a Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community Band Councillor and then served 28 years as the community’s Chief.  He helped found the Millbrook Power Center, the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq, and the Atlantic Policy Congress.  Saint Mary’s University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law Degree in 2014.  Among his other honors: Atlantic Canada’s Business Magazine named him one of the area’s top 50 CEOs; he also was named 2001 Newsmaker of the Year by the Truro Daily News.  For his efforts on behalf of Millbrook First Nation, Paul received the Individual Economic Developer of the Year Award from the Canadian Aboriginal Economic Development Officers in 2004.  Paul died on May 28, 2014, in Truro, Nova Scotia.
