LAKOTAH OYATE (LAKOTA FREEDOM DELEGATION) DECLARES REPUBLIC OF LAKOTAH

Lakotah Oyate, a 4-member organization traveled to Washington, D.C. and contacted the State Department announcing in a letter that the Lakota were unilaterally withdrawing from its treaties with the U.S. government. The letter further declared the Lakota to be “predecessor sovereign of Dakota Territory,” and cited gross violations of the treaties between the Lakota & the U.S. as the immediate cause for withdrawal. The letter invited the U.S. government to enter into negotiations with the newly declared “Lakotah.” It warned that if good-faith negotiations were not begun, then “Lakotah” will begin to administer liens against real estate transactions within the five-state area of Lakotah.” The members of the provisional government of Lakotah were Russell Means, chief facilitator; Tegheya Kte (Garry Rowland), facilitator; Duane “Canupa Gluha Mani” Martin, member; and Phyllis Young, member. The group also held a press conference declaring their freedom.
