TERRABA MARCH TO BUENOS AIRES, COSTA RICA, FOR RESPECT FOR THEIR RIGHTS
The Neso, or Térraba (also Teribe), a warrior people that trace their roots back to the pre-Colombian Chiriquí civilization that dominated Costa Rica, currently live in Panama and Costa Rica. The Diquís Hydroelectric Project and issues concerning the education system represent their ongoing struggles for rights guaranteed by law. To address these and other issues, more than 150 tribal members and others marched along the Inter-American highway to the town of Buenos Aires, 8 miles from their territory, to demand respect for their right to participate in decisions involving their lands. In Buenos Aires, employees of the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE), the Costa Rican government-run electricity and telecommunications services provider filmed and shouted at them causing a confrontation that required police intervention.
