MEXICAN GUARANI WORLD CUP PLAYER GREGORIO GOMEZ ALVAREZ DIED

Born on February 14, 1927, in Tepatitlán, Jalisco, Mexico, Gomez, better known as El Tepa Gómez,joined the C.D. Guadalajara team after being drawn from the local amateur team of his city, Club Tepatitlán, in the late 1940s. Playing defense right back, he made his field debut on February 15, 1948, against Club Tampico. Joining the Mexico National Team in 1949, he played in international tournaments and, in 1950, a World Cup. Gomez was nominated for the 1954 World Cup team but did not make the final call. In August 1954, the Atlas F.C. hired him. Finally, Gomez played with Pumas de la UNAM from 1960-68. In Tepatitlán de Morelos, the Municipal Government commemorated him by naming the local stadium the Stadium Tepa Gómez. Gomez died in Guyadalajara, Mexico.
