NICARAGUAN MATAGALPAS DEFEAT AMERICAN WILLIAM WALKER’S FILIBUSTERS AT BATTLE OF SAN JACINTO

The battle took place in Hacienda San Jacinto, Managua, Nicaragua with 160 soldiers of the Legitimist Septemtrion Army led by Colonel José Dolores Estrada facing 300 Nicaraguan filibusters of William Walker led by Lieutenant Colonel Byron Cole. The filibusters were defeated by Estrada after four hours of combat. The filibusters had 27 killed; Estrada lost 35 with 18 captured. The date of the battle is a national holiday in Nicaragua. The Matagalpa people who are referred to in the battle as the “Indios Flecheros de Matagalpa” were a significant factor in the outcome. A column of 60 Matagalpa natives with bow and arrows fought at the side of Nicaraguan soldiers. The battle marked the end of Walker’s adventure in Nicaragua. The “Indios Flecheros de Matagalpa” were declared National Heroes of the Battle of San Jacinto by the Congress of The Republic of Nicaragua. The declaration also includes a statue built in their honor.
