CREE ACTOR/PHILANTHROPIST TOM JACKSON BORN

Born on One Arrow Reserve, Jackson was of the marginalized in Winnipeg before his voice brought him into radio, TV, and film.  On TV, he appeared on Shining Time Station and Longhouse Tales.  Other TV spots included: Sesame Street, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Street Legal, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, and North of 60.  Films include: Pride of Lions, Deadfall, Skinwalkers, Grizzly Falls, Medicine River, and The Diviners.  As a singer/songwriter, he has 15 albums.  A producer and host of TV fundraisers, his Huron Carole and Singing for Supper Christmas concerts support food banks in Canada and his Dreamcatcher tour supports communities impacted by suicide.  Honors include:  Confederation of Canada Medal (1992); Officer, Order of Canada (2000); JUNO & Gemini Award nominations; Queen’s Jubilee Medals (2002 & 2012); Alberta and Saskatchewan Centennial Medals (both in 2005); and Governor General’s Performing Arts Award (2014). He was Chancellor of Trent University (2009–2013).
